Do Exact Match Domains Still Work For Local Lead Generation?

Five new domains we built, what Semrush shows, and how I pick a name

Do exact match domains still work? Brad Russell of The Lead Gen Lab at his desk.

Yes. I still buy exact match and partial match domains for local lead generation. Across our projects, I have seen keyword-focused domains rank faster, which is why I favour them when a suitable name is available.

At The Lead Gen Lab, we purchase domains, build websites around specific services and locations, and market those websites under their own business names. We then partner with operators who can take the enquiries and deliver the work.

One of those websites, Commercial Solar Gold Coast, reached the first organic position in Google for its main keyword within 24 hours of launch. It remains there in our checks.

We have also taken a different approach with businesses such as Quokka Towing, where we wanted a name people would remember in a competitive market.

Both choices came from looking at the opportunity before buying the domain. Through Digital Hitmen and The Lead Gen Lab, I make those decisions, build the websites with my team and see what turns into enquiries. That experience shapes how I choose a name.

Before You Register Another Domain

  • Exact match and partial match domains still feature in our lead generation work.
  • We built the five main examples in this article on newly registered domains.
  • A partial match can make sense when the exact match is unavailable, another business uses the name or a stronger brand would suit the market.
  • Our Commercial Solar Gold Coast website reached the first organic result within 24 hours. That was a specific result, not a standard timeframe.
  • We back our domain choices with research, website development, content, citations and backlinks.
  • The performance figures below come from Semrush. They show estimated search visibility and traffic, rather than measured enquiries.

Exact Match, Partial Match And Branded Domains Explained

An exact match domain uses the words in the search you want to target.

Take commercialsolargoldcoast.au. We built it around people searching for “commercial solar Gold Coast”. The domain names the service and location without adding a separate brand word.

A partial match includes relevant search words with something added or changed. perthcarportco.com.au keeps “Perth” and “carport”, then adds “Co” to make it a business name.

A branded domain puts more emphasis on a distinctive name. These categories can overlap: Quokka Towing has a memorable brand, but “towing” still tells customers what it does.

ApproachExampleHow we use it
Exact matchcommercialsolargoldcoast.auMatch the service and location we are targeting.
Partial matchperthcarportco.com.auKeep the service and location while adding a brand element.
Brand plus servicequokkatowing.com.auGive the business a memorable name that still identifies its service.

Perth Asbestos Fence Removal is another example of a name built around a service and city. All Trucks Insurance takes a broader approach: it includes the service in the name and serves Australia, without tying the business to one location.

Why I Still Favour Keyword Domains

Rankings are the main reason.

In my experience, a relevant keyword domain gives a well-built local website a useful head start. I’ve seen enough of these sites gain visibility to keep using the approach.

There is also a practical benefit for customers. Someone who needs a carport in Perth can understand what Perth Carport Co offers before opening the website. That clarity suits the way we build lead generation businesses around a defined service and market.

Google’s published guidance gives some context. Its ranking systems guide says it considers words in domain names among many relevance factors. It also describes an exact match domain system that prevents sites receiving excessive credit because their domains match a search. Its SEO Starter Guide says keywords in a domain alone have little ranking effect.

My view comes from the projects we build and manage. These results reflect the whole project, so they cannot tell us how much of the outcome came from the domain alone. We research the market, build the website and do the SEO alongside choosing the name.

That is the full approach behind the examples below. I’ve explained more about the commercial model in my article on lead generation versus marketing agencies.

These websites differ in age and market, so their totals should not be treated as a test of which domain type performs best.

Commercial Solar Gold Coast: First Organic Position Within 24 Hours

The Commercial Solar Gold Coast homepage, a website The Lead Gen Lab built on a new domain.

Commercial Solar Gold Coast is the clearest example of why I keep using exact match domains.

Within 24 hours of launch, we saw it reach the first organic result for “commercial solar Gold Coast”. This was the ordinary website listing, rather than a paid ad or Google Maps result.

Semrush also records number-one positions for:

  • Commercial solar Gold Coast.
  • Commercial solar panels Gold Coast.
  • Commercial solar systems Gold Coast.

The 24-hour timeframe comes from our own observations. Semrush supports the rankings, but does not verify how quickly we first reached them.

I would not promise the same timeframe for another website. This example shows what we achieved in one specific market with a new domain and the website we built around it.

Perth Asbestos Fence Removal: One Service In One City

The Perth Asbestos Fence Removal homepage, a website The Lead Gen Lab built on a new domain.

We launched Perth Asbestos Fence Removal approximately 18 months ago with a clear focus: people in Perth who need an asbestos fence removed.

That gives us a defined customer need to build around. We can keep the service information, location targeting and enquiry process relevant to that job.

Semrush estimated monthly organic traffic at 29 in April 2026 and 256 in September. The latest figures remain at 256, with 98 ranking keywords.

For a website focused on a narrow service, I pay attention to whether we are attracting searches connected to that work. A broad traffic total is less useful if the visitors need something the business does not provide.

Perth Carport Co: Keeping The Keywords And Adding A Brand

The Perth Carport Co homepage, a website The Lead Gen Lab built on a new domain.

Perth Carport Co is approximately six months old. The name retains the service and city, with “Co” giving it more of a business identity.

This is the sort of partial match I’m comfortable using. It is short, easy to understand and gives us a name we can build around.

Semrush’s estimated monthly organic traffic increased from 9 in August to 197 in September 2026. The latest figures show 241, alongside 150 ranking keywords.

It is still a young website. The recent movement gives us something to build on as we develop its presence in the Perth carport market.

All Trucks Insurance: Early Progress Against Established Competitors

The All Trucks Insurance homepage, a website The Lead Gen Lab built on a new domain.

All Trucks Insurance serves customers across Australia from a Perth headquarters. We launched it approximately three to five months ago.

This is a national example, so it adds a different perspective to the local service websites. Its search competitors include established insurers with well-known brands. Semrush’s results for “truck insurance” include Allianz, GIO, AAMI, NTI and Vero.

The early movement has been encouraging. Semrush’s estimated monthly organic traffic increased from 3 in July to 235 in August and 490 in September 2026. The latest figures show 500, with 659 ranking keywords.

Its keyword records include position 4 for “truck insurance cost”. The broader term “commercial truck insurance” sits at position 30, so there is work ahead.

We are seeing a young website gain visibility in a market with established competitors. That makes it worth following as the business develops.

Quokka Towing: A Name Worth Remembering

The Quokka Towing homepage, a website The Lead Gen Lab built on a new domain.

For Quokka Towing, we wanted a more memorable brand in a competitive Perth market.

“Towing” tells the customer what the business does. “Quokka” gives it an identity beyond the service and location. It is a partial match in the broad sense, with the brand doing more of the work in the name.

We launched the website approximately 18 months ago. Semrush estimated monthly organic traffic at 603 in April and 2,007 in September 2026. The latest figures show 2,052, with 762 ranking keywords.

It has the highest estimated traffic among these five examples, although it also serves a different market from carports or commercial solar.

I favour keyword domains, but I’ll choose a stronger brand when I think it suits the business. Quokka Towing is an example of that judgement.

Starting Fresh Or Buying A Domain With History

We have also purchased a handful of previously used domains.

With those, we look at what came before: the type of website, its search visibility and the links pointing to it. Existing links and a relevant history can make a domain worth considering, though buying it does not tell you how the next website will perform.

The five main examples above started fresh. Ceiling Repairs Perth had a different starting point.

Ceiling Repairs Perth: Rebuilding On An Existing Domain

There was no live website on ceilingrepairsperth.com.au when we purchased it. There were backlinks and historical search records showing that someone had used the domain before.

We rebuilt the website approximately six months ago. Semrush now records 112 ranking keywords, including:

  • Position 18 for “ceiling repairs Perth”.
  • Position 9 for “Perth ceiling repair”.

The main keyword has a Semrush difficulty score of 38 out of 100. That is the tool’s estimate of how hard it may be to rank for the term. For comparison, it scores “asbestos fence removal Perth” at 12 and “carports Perth” at 11.

It is a developing project in a more competitive niche. Its previous history was part of the reason we chose the domain. The website still needs ongoing work to compete for its main searches.

The Work We Put Into Every Website

Buying the domain is one decision in a much larger job. Before we launch a website, we need to understand the customer, the competition and how we will turn a visit into an enquiry.

Keyword and competitor research. We look at what people search for, which services those searches relate to and the websites already attracting those customers. That helps us decide what to build and where to focus.

Website development. We use React and Next.js, with an emphasis on fast-loading pages and clear layouts. Customers need to find the service information and make contact easily, including on their phone.

Content and structure. We organise pages around services, locations and customer questions. Clear headings and relevant internal links help visitors find their way through the website.

Structured data. We add schema, which describes the business and page content in a format search engines can read. We keep it consistent with the information customers can see.

Citations and backlinks. We build business listings and relevant links as part of the wider SEO work. A citation is an online mention of the business, such as a directory listing. A backlink is a link from another website.

The service provider’s expertise. Once we have a partner, we add their business details and draw on their knowledge to improve the website. Their experience helps us explain the service accurately, answer the questions customers ask and show who will carry out the work.

A clear route to an enquiry. We make phone numbers, quote forms and next steps easy to find. The website needs to help someone contact the business after they have decided it could be right for the job.

Our guide to lead generation strategies for tradies covers more of the work involved in building enquiry flow.

Choosing An Exact Match, Partial Match Or Stronger Brand

I start with the service and market, then look for a name that suits them.

If a suitable exact match is available, I’ll consider it. If it is unavailable, clashes with another Australian business name or feels too generic for the competition, I’ll look at a partial match or a more distinctive brand.

SituationMy approach
A suitable exact match is available for the service and locationConsider using it.
The exact match is unavailableLook for a short, natural partial match.
Another Australian business uses the proposed nameChoose a distinct name.
The market calls for a more memorable identityPut more emphasis on the brand.
The available names or commercial opportunity are weakReconsider the name, service or market before committing.

Adding a short word can be enough to make a name usable. I also want it to sound like a business someone would remember and feel comfortable contacting.

Competition matters before we buy anything. If the opportunity does not stack up, securing a domain with the right keywords will not fix that.

For an established operator, this does not mean changing the name on your vehicles or giving up a brand you have spent years building. A separate lead generation website can provide another source of enquiries alongside your existing marketing.

From A Domain Choice To Enquiries For Your Business

Most service business owners have a more immediate concern than domain names: they want enough suitable work coming in.

That is where The Lead Gen Lab fits.

We research the opportunity, build and market the website, and partner with a business that can handle the resulting work. Enquiries go to that partner to answer, quote and convert into jobs.

We send each lead to one business and take on one partner per trade, per area, subject to availability.

The fit matters on both sides. We need a market where we can generate relevant enquiries and an operator who can respond and deliver the service. The domain is part of how we reach those customers.

Pick The Name With The Next Customer In Mind

I’ll continue using exact match and partial match domains for lead generation. Across our projects, I’ve seen enough progress from keyword-focused names to keep them central to how we choose and build websites.

I also want a name that suits the market. Commercial Solar Gold Coast makes the service and location clear. Perth Carport Co adds a brand element. With Quokka Towing, we chose a name people could remember in a competitive industry.

Through Digital Hitmen and The Lead Gen Lab, we bring keyword research, website development, content and SEO to those decisions. We build the website, assess its progress and refine it with the knowledge of the business delivering the service.

For a local business owner, the useful question is whether this approach can connect you with the customers you want. The domain, the website and the service provider all need to fit that goal.
